chorizo and figs

August 7, 2011

so as promised, i am writing another recipe for today. i am not sure how i managed to crank one out with my show on friday, but let’s just say i was inspired.

i bet a few of you are laughing that i am making a sausage dish when last week was a vegan recipe. but hey, sometimes i can be fickle. aren’t we all? and i did use chicken sausage.

let me share with you the journey of how i got here then maybe you will understand.

friday night was fabulous and crazy all at the same time (my first solo art show by the way). a good kind of exciting crazy. it is exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time when you are showing your work. you are putting your heart out there for all to see. and in a very public way. and you stand around and watch and chat up all the guests.

i am not going to lie. i’m not an extrovert. quite the opposite. (but you would never know). so with all of the emotion of having my first show and talking to complete strangers about my work i was thoroughly exhausted. i was ready to retreat when the evening was finally finished, but still wanted to celebrate my huge accomplishment. i mean heck, a show is like giving birth. (well, maybe not really.)

so i asked two of my very best friends if they wanted to go grab a drink and some bites up the street at this lovely little tapateria. in fact, that is what it is called, la tapateria. because let’s face it, i needed a glass of tasty spanish wine and a little something to fill my stomach. i am in love with this restaurant! just look at the menu.

the restaurant is spanish and they serve little appetizers, or tapas. i know this because i have been to spain and all they have there is little tapas bars. just a sidebar in case your were wondering about the name.

so after being completely exhausted, i needed some major protein. and the thought of the sweet figs and the spicy chorizo just sounded won.der.ful.

oh and by the way, have i mentioned that their entire restaurant is completely gluten free? and that i can order as much garlic bread as i want. which NEVER happens at a restaurant when you are eating gluten free. so that is exactly what i did. i ordered one and half glasses of wine. two orders of garlic bread. and chorizo and figs. and i enjoyed every celebratory bite.

so in honor of my evening, i wrote my own version of chorizo and figs. i wanted to show my husband just how amazing the dish really was even though we couldn’t go there. i didn’t use real chorizo, but it was still tasty.

chorizo and figs

1 cup of dried figs chopped

3 large chicken chorizo sausages the spiciest you can find (or pork)

3 Tablespoons of chopped fresh rosemary

5-6 Tablespoons of honey

boil the chorizo until it is cooked, around twenty minutes. put cooked chorizo into a heavy iron skillet on medium high. brown on all sides. take the chorizo out of the pan and slice on a diagonal. put back into the pan with chopped dried figs, honey, rosemary and a splash of water. cook for a few minutes letting the figs absorb most of the water. serve warm with some bread or as is.  i made this with a huge salad.

a card from ann on opening night

note: this dish is really rich, a few bites are more than enough. i don’t eat like this every day, but every once in a while it is yummy!

i will be posting more pics from the show tomorrow just in case you are waiting on the edge of your seat.

    Wendy,
I smiled real big when I saw the photo of you talking with someone at your art show. Your art looked incredible hanging on the wall. I am sooooooooo proud of you and all of your accomplishments. Keep up the good work!

Your work looks beautiful on those brick walls. What a wonderful accomplishment. Congratulations.

I know what you mean about feeling exhausted post exhibition opening. I was absolutely shattered the day after my last one. Like you say, so much goes into putting yourself out there for all the world to see.

i am glad that we could run by and be a part of it. ( first of many shows to come~ i might add) the brick totally works as a background for your art.
i am laughing because my husband and i went to Spain for our 15th anniversary several years ago… we fell in love with the tapas bars…. the food is AMAZING. and so is the sense of simplicity and the sense of family in Spain. we enjoyed it all….
i will try your recipe… looks yummy. we havent gone to the Tapeteria but we will NOW. i have heard good things about it…. going to the DMV with my oldest tomorrow for his driver’s permit~ something tells me a glass of wine and a tasty nosh would be lovely…?!!

ps… my yard is FULL of sunflowers… detracts from the oh.not. so.perfect. yard! ha.
i have never seen anything i have created on the web… wow.

Your recipe looks yummy! That’s awesome, your first show! I’m quite shy and to get up and talk to anyone about my work would exhaust me. So glad you did it!

    Have a great day!
