rite of passage

October 11, 2011

i feel like i have passed some rite of passage as an art journalist… i just finished binding my very first art journal. wow! i feel like i can now actually call myself an art journalist. there should be a better title for that by the way. anyways, i am so proud of myself i can hardly stand it. and i figured it out without a tutorial.

i was always so intimidated before now. i have always admired samantha kira’s journals. i even took one of her classes to see how she made them, but never attempted making one. i guess it was just the right time. the creative bug bit after i was looking at pictures of journals that were made by mary ann moss. and i thought, i bet i could do that.

i made a trip to hobby lobby and purchased a thin skinny metal tool for making holes in my paper (i have no idea what this is called), a bone folder, a needle for book binding, book-binding thread and turquoise duct tape. that’s it. i spent maybe $16. oh sorry, it was probably more than that since i used some watercolor paper that i already had.

for the cover i took the front and back of an old book. i had already used all of the papers inside for collage. so are you ready to take a peek? watch the video.

Wendy…love it! I just bought a few supplies to make my own art journal but have been hesitant. I am thinking I am going to alter an old hardcover…thank you for that suggestion. Let the fun begin! Happy to have found your blog too. Julie
