question for you

January 17, 2011

week 43 of 52 weeks; ask a question. when we moved into our new house, the only place that we actually lost storage was our bedroom. we went from a walk in closet to two smaller closets. finding a solution for storage has been a major challenge. most of our clothes have been living in laundry baskets which i don’t recommend. i really wanted an armoire. i have been scouring craiglist for a few months now, looking for just the right piece. but it turns out, armoires are in high demand in colorado springs. every time i would respond to an ad, i would never hear anything back. so yesterday when i finally heard back from someone, i jumped at the chance. and i almost didn’t get it. there was one more person who went to look at it before me, and i thought i had lost it. but it turns out that it was too small for them. yay for me!

so the pics are really not that great because i haven’t had time to take any better ones, but you can get the idea.

i really love the bones of this piece!!! it has a great shape and really fun antique details. it does have several nicks out of it. but i am planning on refinishing it, so i can fix those with a little wood filler. so my question is what color should i go with? i am open for any suggestions. but i am leaning towards white or a light grey. i love the idea of doing grey with white details and then changing the hardware to something like yellow. here is my inspiration from knack studios. barb does amazing work and she is often featured on design sponge.

so what will it be? white? grey? or some other color?

Gray! I vote gray, mostly because I’m a little obsessed with it right now. Also, because it looks awesome with yellow.

Love the piece… is it walnut? Do you want to change the colour of a deco wood piece… I like the white idea. good luck with what ever you do with it. I understand the thrill of the chase and getting the piece you want.

i am not sure if it is walnut. it has a lot of beautiful details and i can understand what you mean about the not wanting to change a deco piece. but, it really is not in the best condition. it has a lot of spots that are going to need to be filled with wood filler and i am not sure i could restore it to the original beauty. i really think painting it is going to be the best.

I have a friend who refinishes pieces and she would DIE to have that!

i know, i kind of lucked out. as soon as i saw it, i knew i had to have it. i only paid $100 for it and i think it is worth more like $500 especially as an antique. the people who had it must not have known it’s value. although, it is pretty dinged up. there are a ton of nicks out of it. i guess it was meant to be! i just love finding treasures.

    Hi Wendy,
I think either white or a pale shade of grey would look great but I would look at the lighting in the room it is going into.If the room is on the darker side I would do a white cause the grey might look abit dull but if the room has lots of light you could do either. When ever I paint furniture I always stick to white cause it’s always the safest for me.hope that helps.Joanne

Oh yes, definitely gray! I painted an armoire gray last spring ( ). It was supposed to be in my dining room, but after living there a little while it got moved to my son’s room. I’m pretty obsessed with gray these days.
