loving my new place

September 24, 2010

i am loving our new house so much. i have been having a ton of fun getting started decorated. decorating a room is a long process for me. it usually happens over a period of a few months. i look at design sites, think about color schemes and mostly just dream. everything is done on a tight budget. craigslist rocks! i love finding second hand furniture and then refinishing them. take the green table in the picture. i am sure my mother (the good deal rock star) found it at the arc or something for under twenty dollars. i then refinished it and painted it a bright green color. in fact, i don’t think i paid full price for any furniture in this room. well, that might not be completely true. i did pay full price for the rug and white love seat because i loved them so. but the chandelier ($50), the dining room table ($150), dining chairs ($65), the brown console piece was my mom’s and i refinished it, and i even made my own ottoman. all of the centerpiece items were thrift store finds. i really have so much fun finding deals and making them my own.

i love arranging groupings of photos and pictures like this. i have so much fun changing out the pictures to go with whatever the theme of the moment is. another one of my budget secrets is framing scrapbooking paper. i am sure i will play around with this arrangement and the pictures in the frames. oh and i do want to find a fun lamp for this console.

i did splurge on new curtains for this room this week. i went for these gorgeous peacock blue curtains from pier one. aren’t they gorgeous? i had an extremely difficult time getting a good shot of them. i have a new appreciation for photographers who shoot spaces. it is so difficult getting just the right light. i still didn’t get the best shot. and it really doesn’t do the curtains justice. they really are stunning. i am glad i took a risk and went a little bit out of my comfort zone. so here is the picture from pier one.

and here they are in my room. i just love the splash of color they add to the space! like i said the picture is not amazing, but you get the idea.

anyways i will keep you posted on how the room progresses and changes. i am sure it will over the next few months. but i feel like i have a good start.

Looks fabulous! We were in the process of moving from the home we have lived in for 22 years to a home in the country. But in the midst of the process, our daughter’s husband left she and her children. So, we have now moved them in to our present home. Soon we will ALL make another move to the house in the country. I have been “collecting” things (thrift stores, etc.) for the “new” house, but had to put everything on hold. We are so crowded now! But it is wonderful having the grandchildren here to play with! Of course, I don’t get anything else done! Oh well……they grow up amazingly fast, so I am trying to take one day at a time.
Congratulations on your new home! I love reading your blog and looking at your pics! In fact, you inspired me to redo a large doll house I purchased for $2.00 into a bookshelf for the children!
